Getting to Know the Body Language

Movements of the human body are separated into two categories. Conscious movements are made to perform an action, emphasize conversation or a statement. Unconscious movements are behind majority of signals made through the human body. These subconscious movements make up 93% of human communication. And these movements are small and involuntary. Subconscious movements consist of eye movements, facial expressions, gestures and body posture. These signals may be used to ascertain a person's state of mind or attitude.

The display of certain movements can be read. Signals can be established if the subject is intoxicated, amused, ecstatic, relaxed, bored, interested or angry. Other emotions that may be interpreted in a subject are shame, satisfaction, relief, pride, guilt, excitement, embarrassment, contentment, and contempt. Words can be used to mislead people from what the subject is actually thinking. The understanding of these signals can help a person establish a subject's true state of mind.

Kinesics is the study of the involuntary movements of the human body. These involuntary movements are triggered either by the subconscious or by biological reactions. When reading these cues, the gesture analyzers should take into consideration the biological reasons for such movement. Some samples of biological reactions are fight or flight actions and lack of interest due to the absence of survival or sexual interest. These must be considered when reading body Language for they can be misinterpreted when looking at subconscious cues. An example of this possible confusion is when someone clutches their arms together. This may be a signal that the person is trying to erect a wall defending them from the person or situation they are faced with. However, it could also be a biological signal that the person is feeling chill. When faced with conflict, this gesture could be understood as opposition. Understanding these factors is the key to properly identifying involuntary movements.

How you interpret body Language can significantly increase your conscious awareness of both the signals you transmit and the signals you observe from others. This can give you a significant advantage in the way you deal with other people, whether personally or professionally. Take note that understanding body Language is not only to be able to read the signals in other people, but more importantly to obtain better self-awareness and even self-control. You can improve or refine what your body says about you when you understand body Language. This way, you will be able to generate a positive improvement in your daily interactions with other people.
