Body Language & Lying - Six Top, Must Know Body Language Signs That Will Tell You They're Lying

There are six main telling signs that someone is lying to you and they are easier to master then you could ever imagine. Once mastered you will be able to quickly and effectively know for sure when someone is taking you for a fool and regain control of a relationship or a negotiation.

We have all probably heard little snippets of information from friends, Books or the Internet that give us a very basic idea of some of the signs to look for when we believe someone is lying to us. The bad news is, is that relying on one or two body Language "tells" can often give false results and cause a lot of damage in a relationship or at work.

Below I will highlight the six main giveaways that with practice and further study will ensure that you will know when you are being lied to in the future.

1) Involuntary body signs.

These are signs we have probably learned from an early age and are telltale signs given off by a bad liar. They include sweating and blushing of the face. Unfortunately, as we learn to lie from an earlier age almost all people are able to hide the signs when under pressure.

2) Eye movements

When people lie they use a different side of the brain from when they are remembering a true event that's happened in the past. The eyes actually move to the side of the brain that is being used when a question is being answered. It's therefore quite easy to spot someone lying simply by observing their eye position when answering your question.

3) Facial expressions

Generally speaking, a true heartfelt emotion will affect both sides of someone's face evenly. When somebody smiles look for symmetry on their face as this will indicate a genuine emotion. When someone is faking a smile they tend to hold that smile as they have to think about it rather than feel it. When someone is genuinely feeling an emotion they do not have to think about these matters as it comes naturally and therefore the smile also appears natural.

4) Body movements

Generally speaking when someone is lying to you they are likely to fidget more than usual. They are trying so hard not to give away their guilt in other ways but ultimately the body will leak the truth subconsciously. Clearly some people are nervous and fidget a lot anyway, so you are looking for an increase in their normal behavior. Liars will want to hide or cover their body from you so don't expect to see a liar to stand in front of you when you ask questions. They may well stand to the side of you all stand with one foot slightly in front of the other and therefore reducing their profile.

5) Hand and arm signs

When someone is lying they tend to rein in their hand and arm movements. Most liars are aware that most folks have a basic understanding of body Language and will therefore actively hold back on any actions in case they give something away. There is one exception to this and that his hands to face movements which increase when someone is lying.

6) Feet and leg signals

Given the chance a liar will try and hide his feet either under a chair or a table. If this is not possible look for feet tapping as this is a very common signal that someone is finding the questions stressful. Also look out for leg crossing as the person tries to protect themselves from your questioning.

Taken randomly the signs will not give you a true indication of whether the person was talking to is lying. The above tips really need to be mastered before you can confidently assess someone's truthfulness. It is always best to err on the side of caution until you are sure you have understood all the body Language rules. It is certainly worth the time and effort to master these as it enables you to remain in total control of your home and work life with confidence.
